Ingredients
- Main Ingredients
- 2 slices soft sandwich bread
- 1 large egg
- 2 slices cheddar cheese, or about 50 g shredded cheddar
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
- Optional Ingredients
- 30 g shredded mozzarella
- Chopped green onions
- Chili flakes
- Paprika
- Fresh parsley
- Turkey ham
- Sliced tomato
- Hot sauce
- Garlic powder
Instructions
- Step 1 — Prepare the Egg
- Crack the egg into a small bowl.
- Add a pinch of salt and black pepper.
- Whisk with a fork until the yolk and white are completely combined.
- Step 2 — Cook the Egg
- Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat.
- Add a small amount of the butter.
- Pour the beaten egg into the pan.
- Let it cook for about 1–2 minutes until just set.
- Avoid overcooking the egg because it will continue cooking slightly inside the sandwich.
- Remove the egg from the pan.
- Step 3 — Assemble the Toast
- Place one slice of bread on a clean cutting board.
- Add one slice of cheddar cheese.
- Place the cooked egg over the cheese.
- Add the second slice of cheddar on top.
- Close with the second slice of bread.
- Step 4 — Toast the Sandwich
- Return the frying pan to medium-low heat.
- Add the remaining butter.
- Place the sandwich in the pan.
- Cook for about 2 minutes until the bottom becomes golden brown and crispy.
- Step 5 — Flip
- Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula.
- Cook the second side for another 1–2 minutes.
- Press gently with the spatula while cooking to help the cheese melt.
- Step 6 — Serve
- Transfer the toast to a cutting board.
- Let it rest for about 30 seconds.
- Cut diagonally in half.
- Serve immediately while the bread is crispy and the cheese is hot and melted.
- Chef Tips
- Use Medium-Low Heat
- Do not use very high heat.
- High heat can burn the bread before the cheese has enough time to melt.
- Medium-low heat creates a crispy golden crust while warming the center evenly.
- Use Soft Bread
- Standard sandwich bread works especially well because it crisps quickly and holds the filling together.
- Combine Two Cheeses
- For more flavor and a better cheese pull, combine cheddar with mozzarella.
- Cheddar gives strong flavor while mozzarella gives a softer melted texture.
- Don’t Overcook the Egg
- Keep the egg soft because it will continue heating inside the sandwich.
- Add Butter Gradually
- A small amount of butter on each side of the sandwich gives better browning than using too much at once.
